Captain Steven Grant "Steve" Rogers started out as the symbol of hope. A World War II veteran.. given the Super Soldier Serum.. leader of the Avengers and one of the most respected heroes on the planet. But in the What If..? universe, everything changed. In 2018 he was infected during the start of the zombie outbreak caused by Hank Pym, and the Captain America everyone knew was gone. What remained was this twisted version.. a silent and relentless zombie driven only by hunger. I’ve had this Zombie Captain America bust for a couple of years and thought it would be the perfect test for the Creality Otter. The sculpt has a lot of complex detail. The stretched jaw.. exposed teeth and bone.. decaying suit fabric.. and the shield fragments behind him. On top of that, the surface is silver which usually reflects light and throws scanners off. The Otter handled it surprisingly well. I scanned indoors using the wireless bridge and kept a steady movement around the bust. The mouth cavity and shield edges needed a couple of slow passes, but the tracking stayed solid and the final model came out with all the definition intact. No spray needed for the metallic finish either.. which is usually a big win for scanning figures like this. Now that the digital model is ready, I can scale it, print it, paint it or even create alternate zombie variants. This is why scanning collectibles is so satisfying. 3D Scanning the Wigan Mining Monument
I stopped by Wigan today to scan the Wigan Mining Monument, a powerful tribute to the town’s coal mining past. The full scan took around 22 minutes using the Creality Otter and wireless bridge. It came out really well overall the tray in the lady’s hand didn’t scan perfectly, but it’s fixable with a bit of cleanup. The rest of the model captured nicely, especially the miner’s face and the clothing detail on all three figures. The statue, found on Library Street in Wigan, features a miner, a pit-brow lass, and a young boy three generations symbolising the town’s mining heritage. It was created by sculptor Steve Winterburn and officially unveiled in September 2021, after being delayed by the pandemic. The monument was funded by the local charity Wigan Heritage and Mining Monument (WHAMM) as a lasting memorial to the thousands of men, women, and children who worked in Wigan’s pits over three centuries. At one point, the area was home to more than a thousand coal shafts, making Wigan one of the biggest mining regions in the old Lancashire coalfield. What makes this sculpture stand out is that it isn’t placed on a plinth the figures stand directly on the cobbles, as if walking alongside you. It’s a thoughtful touch that connects today’s visitors with the generations who lived and worked underground here. If you’re into 3D scanning, this one’s a great subject there’s plenty of open space around it, and the figures are at an ideal height for handheld scanning. Wigan Mining Monument – Scanned with the Creality Otter
I stopped by Lime Street to scan the Ken Dodd statue, and it felt right to share a bit about the man behind it. Sir Ken Dodd was one of Liverpool’s true comedy legends. His career lasted over 60 years, and he became known for his sharp one-liners, his tickling stick, and the Diddy men that so many of us grew up watching. The statue captures his warmth and personality perfectly. It stands right outside Lime Street Station, which feels fitting for someone whose humour began here and spread far beyond Liverpool. I scanned this statue using the creality Otter, and it handled the details well, even with the busy foot traffic. The texture on his hair and coat came through better than I expected. To go with the post, I’ve used his classic song “Happiness,” because it sums him up. He made people smile for decades, and that cheerful spirit is exactly what this statue gives off too. I was in Wigan again today and couldn’t miss the chance to scan the George Formby statue at the Grand Arcade. The scan came out well, and it really captures his character, especially with that classic ukulele pose he was known for. George Formby was born in Wigan in 1904 and went on to become one of Britain’s best loved entertainers. Most people know him for his cheeky humour and the upbeat songs he performed with his ukulele. One of his most famous tracks, “When I’m Cleaning Windows”, became a hit in the 1930s and still gets a laugh today. The statue was created by Amanda Barton and unveiled in 2007 to celebrate his legacy in his hometown. It’s a popular spot because it shows him with the same cheerful energy he brought to his films, radio shows, and live performances. Scanning indoors was a nice change from the usual outdoor statues. The lighting was steady, which helped a lot, though the polished bronze can catch highlights so I worked around the glare. The ukulele has a few small areas that need patience, but the Otter handled it well. If you enjoy scanning statues with a bit of personality, this one’s worth doing.
