Bit of Histoy
Liverpool is packed with world famous landmarks, but some of the best stories are hiding in plain sight.
Next time you’re on Water Street, pause at the bronze doors of the old Bank of Liverpool and take a closer look at the tiger heads.. though the bank originally called them lions. The building dates back to 1896, but these doors were added later, in 1934, and they’ve been part of a quiet city ritual ever since.![]()
In the 1930s, Lascar sailors lived around the Pitt Street area, roughly a 20 minute walk away. Before setting off on dangerous Atlantic crossings, many would stop here to rub the tiger’s teeth for good luck. It was believed that this small act would protect them from drowning and help guarantee a safe return home.![]()
Nearly a century later, the tradition hasn’t faded. Thousands of Scousers and visitors still reach out and rub those fangs today. The metal is worn smooth from decades of hands doing exactly the same thing.
It’s a simple detail, easy to miss.. and a brilliant reminder of Liverpool’s deep roots as a global port city, where superstition, survival, and everyday life were tightly woven together.![]()

This is just WOW
The thousands of Liverpool civilians killec by German bombers during World War II are remembered here.. not as numbers.. but as people.
This is the Liverpool Blitz Memorial.. designed by Tom Murphy.. a powerful tribute to the families and lives torn apart during the Blitz.
Every figure represents ordinary people caught in extraordinary times.. sheltering.. surviving. and too often.. lost
I haven't scanned this one vet.. but I will This is a teaser.. a promise to digitally preserve another piece of Liverpool's history.. so it's never forgotten. Some places deserve silence before the scan.. this is one of them.
Follow to see this memorial captured in full 3D.. for remembrance.. for history.. for futur#liverpoolhistorvi#ww2o#blitzmemorial #neverforgotten##CulturalPreservationralPreservation

Today I had the privilege of 3D scanning the Bill Shankly statue outside Anfield..one of the most important cultural landmarks in Liverpool football history.![]()
This iconic statue of Bill Shankly stands at just over 8ft tall (around 2.4 metres), making it a challenging but rewarding scan. I used the Creality Otter Lite 3D scanner with an extender pole to accurately capture the upper sections while keeping stable tracking and clean geometry across the entire figure.![]()
From a 3D scanning and 3D printing point of view, this statue throws up real world challenges..raised arms, deep shadows, changing light, and constant public movement. Slowing everything down and working in controlled passes made it possible to capture a detailed digital model suitable for archival preservation and 3D printing.![]()
Once processed, the scan was 3D printed using the Creality K2, turning a historic Liverpool landmark into a physical model you can hold in your hands. This is where scanning and printing really come together..from real-world monument to digital asset to printed object.![]()
Bill Shankly arrived at Liverpool in 1959 and transformed a Second Division club into a dominant force, winning three league titles, two FA Cups, and Liverpool’s first European trophy. Beyond trophies, he created the culture, mentality, and connection with supporters that still defines the club today.
This is why digital cultural preservation matters.![]()
Statues weather.
Cities evolve.
But high-quality 3D scans and 3D prints preserve history in a way photographs never can..for education, archiving, and future generations.
