Scanned The new Spirit of Liverpool Liver Bird in Central Station today using the Otter Lite..

This one pushed me a bit.. the statue is smooth, reflective and the light around the wings made me think I’d lose tracking straight away.. At first it did struggle, but after testing a few angles I found the sweet spot and changed my movement slightly..

Once I approached it right, the Otter Lite locked on and handled it great..

The sculpture is a 8 foot Liver Bird on a rock stand, created by artist Rick Myers in memory of Paul Rice, former chief executive of the Liverpool Commercial District Partnership.. It originally stood at the Pier Head before finding its new home inside Liverpool Central Station, where thousands of people pass it every day..

The Liver Bird itself is more than a symbol.. it’s the heart of Liverpool’s identity.. You see it on the city’s crest, the football badges, the buildings, the ships, the merch everything.. The two most famous Liver Birds sit on top of the Royal Liver Building, said to watch over the city and the River Mersey.. One protects the people, and the other watches the sailors heading out to sea..

There’s a local saying that if the two birds ever fly away, Liverpool will fall.. so we’re hoping they stay put for a long time yet..

Getting to scan a modern interpretation of such an iconic symbol feels special.. and again it shows how capable these scanners are when you take your time and treat every statue differently..
