For millions of visitors and daily commuters, stepping off the train at Liverpool Lime Street station means being immediately greeted by a true local legend. Standing proudly on the main concourse is the beloved bronze statue of the late, great Sir Ken Dodd. As I continued my ongoing project to digitally preserve the rich cultural heritage of our city, I brought my Creality Otter Lite 3D scanner into the bustling station to capture this iconic tribute to the master of mirth.

Here is the wonderful story behind this famous station monument and how the latest handheld 3D scanning technology makes archiving it so incredibly easy.

The History Of The Ken Dodd Monument

Sir Ken Dodd was one of the greatest entertainers Britain has ever produced, and his connection to his home city of Liverpool was unbreakable.

Here are the key historical facts about this cheerful public artwork:

  • The Sculpture: The monument is actually part of a larger piece officially titled A Chance Meeting. It features Sir Ken Dodd standing just a few feet away from another famous Liverpool figure, the prominent politician Bessie Braddock.
  • The Artist: The incredibly lifelike bronze figures were created by the renowned Liverpool sculptor Tom Murphy, adding to his massive portfolio of iconic city monuments.
  • The Unveiling: The artwork was commissioned by Merseytravel and officially unveiled on the station concourse in June 2009. In true Ken Dodd fashion, the comedy legend actually attended the unveiling himself and posed next to his bronze twin.
  • The Details: Tom Murphy perfectly captured the energetic essence of Doddy. The statue features his famous wild hair, his beaming smile, and of course, he is holding his trademark Diddy Man tickling stick.

Scanning Bronze In A Busy Station With The Creality Otter Lite

Digitizing a highly reflective bronze statue right in the middle of one of the busiest railway stations in the country presents a unique set of challenges. The harsh artificial lighting of the concourse and the constant stream of passengers meant I needed a reliable and unobtrusive tool. The Creality Otter Lite proved to be absolutely perfect for the job.

Here is why this scanner excelled during the capture process:

  • Incredible Precision: Capturing the intricate details of the famous tickling stick and the subtle facial features meticulously sculpted by Tom Murphy required serious accuracy. The 0.05 millimeter precision of the Otter Lite flawlessly mapped the complex textures of the historic bronze.
  • Overcoming Station Lighting: Artificial indoor lighting often creates harsh glare on dark metal, confusing traditional scanners. The advanced stereo vision system handled the mixed lighting conditions inside Lime Street perfectly without needing any messy scanning sprays, keeping the station concourse completely clean.
  • Wireless Portability: Scanning in a crowded public transport hub means you have to be fast and strictly avoid creating any tripping hazards for commuters. The lightweight and entirely wireless design of the Otter Lite allowed me to quickly step in, walk smoothly around the figure, and capture every angle without any trailing cables getting in the way.

A Digital Archive Of A Comedy Legend

Preserving our local monuments in 3D allows us to capture the joy and personality of our city. Having a flawless digital model of the Ken Dodd statue ensures that his incredible legacy of laughter, along with the brilliant sculptural work of Tom Murphy, can be shared and enjoyed by fans all over the world.
