Walking toward Anfield always brings a wave of emotion, but my recent visit to the stadium was incredibly poignant. Following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in July 2025, thousands of football fans from across the country came together to create a massive, heartbreaking tribute area outside the ground. As part of my mission to document our local history, I felt it was essential to respectfully preserve the memory of this beautiful outpouring of love using my original Creality Otter 3D scanner.
Here is the story behind this incredibly moving tribute and how advanced 3D scanning allowed me to digitally archive such a delicate subject.
The Story Behind The Tribute
The loss of Diogo Jota transcended football rivalries. When the news broke of the fatal car accident in Spain, the entire football community was left in shock.
Here are the key details about this memorial space:
- A Sea Of Tributes: The area outside Anfield quickly filled with thousands of physical items. Fans left mountains of flowers, heartfelt written messages, balloons, and works of art to honour the beloved number 20.
- Football United: What made this tribute so incredibly special was the unity it represented. Scattered among the red Liverpool shirts were jerseys from Everton, Leeds United, Rangers, and clubs from all over the world. It was a true testament to how much Jota was respected across the sport.
- The Location: The tributes were lovingly placed by fans near the Bill Shankly statue and opposite the Hillsborough memorial, creating a focal point for collective grief and reflection.
- A Permanent Legacy: The club carefully archived the physical items and retired the number 20 shirt across all levels of the club. They have since confirmed that the flowers were composted to be used at club sites, while other artifacts will be respectfully recycled to help create a permanent memorial sculpture in the future.
Scanning Delicate Tributes With The Original Creality Otter
Digitizing a fragile collection of flowers, fabric shirts, and handwritten notes is vastly different from scanning solid bronze or stone. It requires a scanner that can handle chaotic textures and incredibly fine details without disturbing the area. The original Creality Otter proved to be the perfect tool for this sensitive task.

The advanced vision system handled the bright colours and varied materials perfectly in the natural light without needing any scanning sprays.
- Respectful Distance: Scanning in a public area of mourning means you have to be fast, quiet, and unobtrusive. The advanced tracking and One Shot 3D imaging technology allowed me to smoothly walk around the edge of the tributes, capturing a highly detailed 3D record without getting in the way of fans paying their respects.
Archiving A Moment Of Unity
Preserving this temporary but deeply profound tribute in 3D is about archiving the heart and soul of the football community. Having a digital model of the Diogo Jota tribute area ensures that the overwhelming love and unity shown by the fans during such a tragic time can be remembered forever.
