When you step inside the massive, awe inspiring space of the Anglican Liverpool Cathedral, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the architecture. Yet, tucked away in the peaceful Childrens Chapel, there is an incredibly tender and intimate piece of art that demands attention. It is the Holy Family sculpture, created by the legendary artist Josefina de Vasconcellos. During my latest project to digitally preserve the heritage of Liverpool using my Creality Otter Lite 3D scanner, capturing this beautiful piece was an absolute priority.

Here is the story behind this moving artwork and how handheld 3D scanning technology makes archiving it so effective.

The History Of The Holy Family Sculpture

Josefina de Vasconcellos was a remarkable artist who created art into her 100th year. Her work often focused on themes of reconciliation, peace, and family.

Here are the key facts about this specific monument:

  • The Artist: Josefina de Vasconcellos was an internationally renowned sculptor, and at one point, she was the oldest living sculptor in the world before her passing in 2005.
  • The Location: The sculpture is located in the Childrens Chapel inside Liverpool Cathedral, a quiet space dedicated to reflection and family life.
  • The Design: Unlike many traditional, stiff depictions of the subject, Josefinas Holy Family is carved in a flowing, naturalistic style. The gentle posture of the figures expresses closeness, protection, and deep love, offering a quiet reflection on the sacredness of family.
  • The Focus On Joseph: One of the unique aspects of Josefinas religious works is her portrayal of Joseph. Instead of placing him in the background as a bystander, she consistently sculpts him as a strong, protective father figure who is central to the family unit, embracing both Mary and Jesus.

Scanning Indoor Statues With The Creality Otter Lite

Digitizing a smooth sculpture inside a vast cathedral comes with a very specific set of challenges. The complex indoor lighting and the intricate, flowing lines of the carving require a highly capable tool. The Creality Otter Lite proved to be absolutely perfect for the job.

Here is why this scanner excelled during the capture process:

  • Exceptional Precision: Capturing the tender facial expressions and the smooth, flowing drapery of the figures required serious accuracy. The 0.05 millimeter precision of the Otter Lite flawlessly mapped the delicate textures and intricate details of the artwork.
  • Overcoming Cathedral Lighting: The varied artificial and natural light streaming through stained glass can often confuse traditional scanners. The advanced stereo vision system handled the mixed lighting conditions perfectly without needing any messy scanning sprays, which is absolutely crucial when working around revered cathedral art.
  • Smooth Tracking Capability: Because the figures of the Holy Family are sculpted so closely together in a protective embrace, there are numerous overlapping elements and tricky undercuts. The lightweight and entirely wireless design of the Otter Lite allowed me to maneuver around the group seamlessly, capturing every hidden detail without losing my tracking data.

Preserving A Tender Moment In 3D

Taking the time to preserve the art within our places of worship in 3D allows us to capture the spiritual and cultural heart of Liverpool. Creating a flawless digital replica of this Josefina de Vasconcellos masterpiece ensures that its message of peace, protection, and family love can be experienced by people all over the world.
