Returning to the historic grounds of Anfield always feels like stepping onto hallowed turf. The History Of The John Houlding Monument
Without John Houlding, football on Merseyside would look completely different today. His story is the very foundation of the red half of the city.
Here are the key historical facts about the man and his monument:
- The Founder: Houlding was a prominent local businessman and the original owner of Anfield. After a rent dispute in 1892, Everton FC left the ground to move to Goodison Park. Instead of selling the land, Houlding decided to form an entirely new team to play at his empty stadium, and Liverpool Football Club was officially born.
- The Artist: The striking bronze monument was created by the renowned Liverpool sculptor Tom Murphy, the very same artist who crafted the iconic Bill Shankly statue outside the Kop.
- The Unveiling: The bust was commissioned as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of the club and was officially unveiled on November 8 2018.
- The Design: The sculpture stands just under seven feet tall upon its granite plinth. It depicts Houlding not in sporting gear, but in his official mayoral attire, reflecting his time serving as the Lord Mayor of Liverpool from 1897 to 1898. Because there are very few photographs of Houlding in existence, Tom Murphy actually visited the Town Hall to study the intricate mayoral chain to ensure the bronze replica was perfectly accurate.
- The Location: You can find the monument located on 97 Avenue, looking proudly toward the massive Main Stand of the stadium he built.
Scanning A Tall Bronze Bust With The Original Creality Otter
Digitizing a bronze bust sitting on a tall granite plinth outdoors presents several challenges. The height of the monument, the highly detailed mayoral chain, and the dark reflective metal require a scanner with serious capabilities. Once again, the original Creality Otter was the perfect tool for the job.
Here is why this scanner excelled during the capture process:
- Exceptional Precision: Capturing the intricate links of the mayoral chain and the subtle facial features researched by Tom Murphy required immense accuracy. The 0.02 millimeter precision of the original Otter flawlessly mapped the fine details of the bronze collar and the texture of Houldings coat.
- Four Lens Stereo Vision: The scanner uses dual long focal lenses for capturing the smallest details and dual short focal lenses for easily mapping larger areas. This setup allowed me to capture the highly detailed bronze bust and the smooth, blocky granite plinth seamlessly in one go.
- No Sprays Needed: Applying scanning spray to a deeply respected club monument is simply not an option. The advanced vision system managed the dark, reflective metallic surface perfectly in the natural outdoor light without any additional preparation.
- Smooth Tracking Capability: Because the statue sits just under seven feet high, I had to reach up and move carefully around the plinth to capture every angle. The advanced tracking and One Shot 3D imaging technology meant I could move steadily around the monument without ever losing my tracking data, even when scanning from below.
