Taking a short journey outside of Liverpool, my ongoing mission to digitally preserve our most important regional heritage brought me to Warrington. Located right in the heart of the busy Golden Square shopping centre is a deeply moving community art installation and sculpture known as Our Past Our Present Our Future. To ensure the powerful message of this memorial is preserved forever, I brought my original Creality Otter 3D scanner to capture every heartfelt detail.

Here is the emotional story behind this collaborative community monument and how advanced 3D scanning technology makes archiving it so seamless.

The History Of The Warrington Peace Monument

The town of Warrington experienced unimaginable tragedy in March 1993 during the IRA bombing, which claimed the lives of two young boys and injured many others. This artwork stands as a testament to how the community came together to heal and look forward.

Here are the key facts about this inspiring project:

  • The Inspiration: Created to mark the 21st anniversary of the tragedy in 2014, the project was designed to help a new generation understand the history of their town while focusing on a positive path forward.
  • The Artists: The project was guided by local artists Andy and Sharon Shaw, who worked closely with schoolchildren to bring the vision to life.
  • The Community Effort: Pupils from 20 different primary schools across Warrington participated in creating the artwork. They focused entirely on the themes of love, peace, hope, and reconciliation.
  • The Design: The display features colourful and intricate pieces of art that culminated in a dedicated sculptural installation. It proudly bears the words Our Past Our Present Our Future, reminding everyone who walks past of the enduring strength and unity of the town.
  • The Location: It is situated prominently inside the Golden Square shopping centre, serving as a daily reminder of peace amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday retail life, perfectly complementing the nearby River of Life memorial.

Scanning A Community Tribute With The Original Creality Otter

Digitizing a multimedia installation in the middle of a busy indoor shopping centre presents a unique set of challenges. Between the varied textures of the artwork, the reflective surfaces, and the constant stream of shoppers, I needed a highly capable and unobtrusive tool. The original Creality Otter proved to be absolutely perfect for the task.

Here is why this scanner excelled during the capture process:

  • Exceptional Precision: Capturing the intricate details of the artwork and the physical textures of the materials required immense accuracy. The 0.02 millimeter precision of the original Otter flawlessly mapped every sculpted element and piece of lettering created by the children and artists.
  • Four Lens Stereo Vision: The scanner uses dual long focal lenses for capturing the smallest artistic details and dual short focal lenses for easily mapping the larger framework of the installation. This setup allowed me to capture the highly detailed individual components and the overall structure seamlessly in one pass.
  • Overcoming Indoor Lighting: Artificial mall lighting often creates harsh glare and unpredictable shadows. The advanced vision system managed the mixed lighting conditions perfectly without the need for any scanning sprays, ensuring the community artwork remained completely untouched and respected.
  • Smooth Tracking Capability: Because the display is located in a high traffic area, I had to be quick and precise. The advanced tracking and One Shot 3D imaging technology meant I could move steadily across the entire piece without ever losing my tracking data, even with shoppers walking by in the background.

A Digital Archive Of Hope And Reconciliation

Preserving our local community monuments in 3D allows us to capture the profound resilience of our region. Having a flawless digital model of Our Past Our Present Our Future ensures that the beautiful collaborative work of the Warrington schoolchildren, along with Andy and Sharon Shaw, can be explored and remembered as a lasting message of peace by people all over the world.
