Continuing my digital preservation journey through North Wales, my latest project kept me in the beautiful town of Prestatyn. Just off the bustling High Street, situated in a quiet pedestrianized square, stands a deeply touching piece of public art known simply as the Mother and Child statue. As part of my mission to archive our local heritage, bringing my Creality Otter Lite 3D scanner to capture this intimate monument was an absolute must.
Here is the story behind this beautiful local sculpture and how advanced handheld 3D scanning technology makes preserving it so effortless.
The History Of The Mother And Child Monument
Public art in Prestatyn often reflects the strong sense of community in the town, and this specific sculpture has been a familiar sight to locals for many years.
Here are the key facts about the artwork:
- The Artist: The touching statue was created by the late Norman Makinson, a highly respected ceramic artist, designer, and sculptor who lived locally. He and his wife Kathleen, a notable silversmith, were well known figures in the regional art community.
- The Design: The sculpture is a tender depiction of a nude mother gently holding her baby. It beautifully captures the universal and timeless bond of maternal love through smooth, flowing shapes.
- The Relocation: The statue has actually moved during its lifetime. It was originally located in the main High Street precinct before being relocated in 2014 to a pedestrianized corner near the bus station, allowing it to remain a prominent feature of the town centre.
- The Resilience: Over the years, the monument has sadly been the target of vandalism and graffiti. Thankfully, the local council and community have consistently rallied to clean and restore the statue, proving just how much it is valued by the people of Prestatyn.
Scanning A Tender Sculpture With The Creality Otter Lite
Digitizing a smooth and subtly detailed statue in a public pedestrian square requires a tool that is fast, highly accurate, and completely unobtrusive. The Creality Otter Lite proved to be absolutely perfect for the task.
Here is why this scanner excelled during the capture process:
- Incredible Precision: Capturing the gentle curves and the intimate facial expressions sculpted by Norman Makinson required serious accuracy. The 0.05 millimeter precision of the Otter Lite flawlessly mapped the smooth textures and flowing lines of the artwork.
- No Messy Sprays: Because this monument has a history of needing careful cleaning and restoration, applying any sort of dulling spray was completely out of the question. The advanced vision system handled the surface beautifully in the natural outdoor lighting without any extra preparation.
- Wireless Portability: Scanning in a pedestrianized shopping area means you need to be quick and avoid creating tripping hazards for people walking by. The lightweight and entirely wireless design of the Otter Lite allowed me to walk smoothly around the statue, capturing every angle quickly without any trailing cables getting in the way.
A Digital Archive Of Maternal Love
Preserving our local monuments in 3D allows us to capture the cultural fabric of our towns. Having a flawless digital model of the Mother and Child statue ensures that the incredible artistic talent of Norman Makinson, and the beautiful subject matter he chose to sculpt, can be respected and remembered by future generations long after the physical elements weather away.
